The Master of Theology (MTh) programme provides an advanced level theological qualification for those who have already completed a recognised Bachelor’s, Bachelor’s with Honours, or a Postgraduate Diploma qualification in theology, with a GPA of 7.0 (B), and want to upgrade their qualifications in a specific area to extend their understanding of Christian Ministries.
Postgraduate courses are usually taught in block courses of one or two weeks (depending on the particular course). This allows people living outside of Auckland to travel for just the block course teaching, and helps those working full-time to fit postgraduate study into their busy lives.
Laidlaw’s Masters graduates enter or return to church and mission leadership roles, others go on to doctoral study as preparation for a teaching career. Still others apply their deep faith development and advanced integrative skills to roles in business, community service, education, the arts, sports administration – in fact all vocations can gain from those who can think through issues carefully and articulate them in a profound manner.
Level 9 entry:
The MTh degree may be completed with 120 credits where the candidate has completed a four-year Honours degree in Theology or Ministry with first or second class Honours OR a Postgraduate Diploma in Theology with a grade point average of 7.0 (B).
The 120-credit MTh consists of a 40,000 word level 9 thesis.
The MTh will be awarded with Merit if the GPA range is between 7.5 and 7.99.
The MTh will be awarded with Distinction if the GPA range is 8.0 and above.
Dissertation and theses courses last six months each (with two being taken concurrently for full-time study. To allow time for writing and approval of a research proposal before starting, there are multiple enrolment intakes for theses/dissertation courses throughout the year. Please refer to additional information for intake dates.

The Masters in Theology must be completed within 6 years if taken part time. The opportunity to continue beyond these time limits will be considered on a case by case basis and with approval of the Academic Head.
Students with a GPA of 7.0 (B) or higher in their PGDipTh courses are eligible to progress to MTh_120.
*A pre-requisite for level 9 entry is successful completion of the R351 Postgraduate Research and Writing course. If a PGDipTh student plans to progress onto the 120-credit MTh this course needs to be taken as part of the PGDipTh.

Permission to enter level 9 needs to be given by the PG lead prior to writing a research proposal. To allow time for writing and approval of the research proposal before starting, there are multiple enrolment intakes throughout the year, after which continuous enrolment is compulsory until completion:
