A unique aspect of Te Wānanga Ihorangi is our commitment to seeing te reo Māori as the primary medium in which our hapori whakapono (e.g. Hāhi) express their faith and beliefs. This vision and mission are captured in our organisation whakatauākī:
“Ko te reo te kauwaka o taku whakapono”
(Te reo Māori is the sacred vessel of my faith)
Made up of whānau who come from Ringatū, Mihinare, Te Hāhi Iriiri, and Te Hāhi Pakipaki whakapapa; this whakapono-based language school is the only one of its kind in Aotearoa.

Reclaiming te reo Māori can be a long and hard process. For some Māori language learners, the classroom environment is fraught with feelings of inadequacy, historical pain and never feeling ‘Māori enough’. Yeah, we know these stories, and we understand.
Te Wānanga Ihorangi has created a learning environment where language anxiety is acknowledged. We have supportive and understanding kaiako, wrap-around pastoral support, a great teacher-student ratio, in-class kaiāwhina, catch-up sessions, and space for one-on-one tutorials every Friday. Te Wānanga Ihorangi can’t replace the hard work, courage, and dedication you will need to reclaim te reo Māori. However, we are committed to removing as many of the in-class barriers that stop our students from succeeding.
All learning is delivered through Te Wānanga Ihorangi. Laidlaw is responsible for the academic provision and liaison with government education agencies.
Our programmes will encourage and challenge each student to pursue te reo Māori to the highest level. We are committed to forming graduates who write, read, and speak te reo Māori with real-world confidence.
